What Is The Wire Size For A Dryer

By | July 23, 2022

The decision on what wire size for a dryer to use can be a confusing one. Many people are uncertain as to the best wire size when it comes to wiring for an electrical appliance, such as a dryer. Fortunately, understanding the correct wire size for a dryer isn't difficult and is actually quite straightforward.

A dryer needs a minimum of 30 amps of electricity to function properly. This means you will need a 30-amp dryer circuit, which requires a 10 AWG (American Wire Gauge) copper wire. Larger capacity dryers, like heavy-duty models, require a 40 amp service and 12 AWG copper wire. In order to accommodate larger appliances, some homes also need to use a 20-amp breaker, which typically requires 14 AWG copper wire.

When connecting the wire to the outlet, make sure that a UL approved strain relief fitting is used. Additionally, make sure that the wire is rated to handle the current being supplied to the dryer. Be sure to run ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) protection to ensure electrical safety. Lastly, be sure to properly label the circuit breaker panel so that everyone in the household is aware of which breaker controls the dryer.

Installing a dryer correctly requires careful consideration of the type and size of wire being used. It’s important to always refer to local codes and regulations to ensure that the installation is compliant and that the wire size chosen is up to code. Ultimately, the wire size used for a dryer should be 10 AWG minimum and the larger the appliance, the higher the wire gauge should be.
