How To Wire A Generator Into Breaker Panel

By | August 10, 2022

Wiring a generator into your breaker panel can seem like a daunting task if you’re not an electrician or experienced handyman, but it can be done safely with the right steps. It’s important to start by researching the specs of the generator and any local building codes that may apply, as working with electricity can be dangerous. Then, set up the generator in the appropriate area outside and make sure it’s working properly. Once the generator is ready, it can be connected to the breaker panel.

First, shut off all power to the breaker panel. Then, turn off the main breaker on the panel. This prevents electric shock to anyone who’s connecting the wires. After, attach the ground wire from the generator to the ground bar on the panel. Then, attach the red and black wires from the generator to their designated spots in the panel. This is usually done by inserting the wiring into the provided lugs. Finally, close the circuits and restore power.

Once power is restored, check for shorts or any other potential problems. If all looks good, then the generator is now connected to the breaker panel. Keep in mind that the breaker may trip if the generator is overloaded, so be sure to check the generator's rated wattage and keep an eye on the load it’s generating. Additionally, it’s important to follow all safety instructions and local regulations when wiring a generator into a breaker panel.
