Installing a new 120V GFCI outlet can seem complicated, but with the right wiring diagram it can be done in just a few steps. A GFCI outlet provides protection against electrical shock from faulty wiring and is required for certain wet areas around the home such as bathrooms, kitchens, garages, workshops, and outdoor locations. Most wiring diagrams for GFCI outlets provide three wires, a hot wire, a neutral wire, and a ground wire. Knowing which wire goes where is essential before beginning your installation.

The first step when installing a GFCI outlet is locating the main power source and shutting off the circuit breaker that supplies power to the outlet. Then you must locate the cable or wires that feed the outlet. If you can’t identify the wires then a voltmeter should be used to determine which one is hot, neutral, and ground. Make sure to disconnect the power before you begin installing your GFCI outlet.

Next, connect the wires to the GFCI outlet. The black wire, or the hot wire, connects to the brass terminal while the white wire, or neutral, connects to the silver terminal. The bare copper wire is the ground wire and should be connected to the green terminal. Once all of the wires are connected the cover plate can be installed and the circuit breaker turned back on. Before flipping the breaker switch make sure to test the GFCI outlet with a GFCI tester to ensure it is correctly wired and is functioning properly. Once the GFCI passes the test it is safe to use.

Installing a GFCI outlet is easy with the right wiring diagram and a few simple tools. With a little patience and careful attention to detail your installation will be complete in no time.
