Wiring a switch to an outlet is a common electrical upgrade. Many people choose to add switches to outlets for easier control of overhead lighting, or even to create a two switch wall fixture. By adding a switch to an existing outlet, you can eliminate the extra step of plugging and unplugging a light each time you want to turn it on or off. This also adds a modern flair to your home lighting setup, and can make it easier to control the lighting in each room.

One of the first things you have to consider when wiring a switch to an outlet is the type of switch and the amperage of the circuit. A double-pole switch should be used if the amperage being used is 240 volts or greater. If the amperage of the circuit is less than 15 amps, a single-pole switch will suffice. You want to make sure the switch is the same size as the wiring that is already in place.

Once the switch has been chosen, it’s time to move on to the other parts and pieces you need to complete this project. You will need to turn off the power before beginning, and then strip the ends of the wires. Then, the black and white wires from the outlet must be connected to the brass screws on the switch. Any remaining wires should be connected to the corresponding colors on the switch. Finally, the ground wire should be connected to the green screw. After that, it’s just a matter of setting the switch in the box and tightening the screws – and you’ve successfully wired a switch to an outlet!
