Trailer lights are a crucial part of ensuring the safety of drivers and vehicle occupants on the road. Properly configuring the wiring for trailer lights can seem like an intimidating task, but it doesn’t have to be. With the right knowledge and tools, anyone can properly configure their trailer lighting.
To provide proper and legal visibility for your trailer, you will need to equip it with at least two square reflectors, one facing forward and one facing backward, as well as turn signals and brake lights. Additionally, trailers over 8 feet in length must also be outfitted with running lights, which are typically red, and separate turn signals that operate when the brakes are applied. To ensure these lights function correctly, your trailer must have a working wire harness.
The wiring harness consists of two main parts: the main harness and the connector. The main harness consists of several colored wires such as yellow, brown, green, and red. Each of these wires has a specific purpose. For instance, the yellow wire connects to the left turn signal, while the red wire connects to the right turn signal. Additionally, the black wire is the most important because it carries power from the battery to the other wires. The black wire should also be connected to the Trailer Battery Charging Relay. Once the main harness is wired correctly, the connector clips into the main harness, connecting the lights to the main harness. Following these steps will allow you to confidently configure your trailer with legally compliant lighting.
