What Wire To Use In Conduit Underground

By | August 16, 2022

When it comes to running an underground electrical conduit, the type of wire you should use is critical. The conditions down below can be considerably harsher than aboveground, so you want a wire that will stand up to the elements and remain safe over time. There are several factors to consider when selecting the right wire for your underground conduit, but one of the most important is the material the wire is made from.

Copper is a popular choice due to its excellent corrosion and fire resistance. It’s also a good electrical conductor, meaning that electricity will travel through it quickly and can handle higher power loads. Copper is expensive, however, so if you’re on a budget, aluminum may be a better choice. Aluminum is a cost-effective alternative to copper, although it is slightly less durable and not as good a conductor. It’s still a good option for smaller projects.

Alternatively, you may want to consider using stranded wires. Stranded wire is composed of a series of individual wires twisted together to form a single conductor. This makes it more resistant to damage due to vibration and temperature fluctuations. It’s also more flexible than solid wire, making it easier to work with in confined spaces. Stranded wire costs more than solid wire and can be harder to install, but it is more resistant to wear and tear and is generally considered to be a safer option for underground conduits.
