Single-phase motors require a start capacitor and usually two contactors (or relays) known as the main contactor and the auxiliary contactor. The two contactors are wired in series and serve to limit the current flow when starting the motor. The start capacitor provides the boosted voltage required to start the motor. It is connected between the two contactors, across the two lines of supply.
The process of starting a single-phase motor is fairly simple. First, the main contactor must be closed which allows the current to flow to the motor. Then, the start capacitor must be charged, which boosts the voltage going into the motor and gives it the kickstart it needs to begin running. Finally, the same sequence is reversed and the auxiliary contactor is opened again to stop the motor.
