The technology is simple in theory but tricky to execute. Fiber optic cables are made out of thin strands of glass or plastic, called optical fibers. Light is then shot through these strands, carrying information quickly and accurately along the cable. Building these cables is a complex process that requires specialized machines and techniques.

The process begins with coating a central core of glass with a special compounds that allows light to travel without being absorbed. This is surrounded by a layer of plastic that makes it waterproof and protects it from damage. Then, it’s wound around layers of Kevlar strands. The protective sleeve is made of several layers of insulation, making it more robust and resistant to electrical and environmental interference. Finally, it’s terminated and tested to ensure that the data is transferred without any signal loss.

Making fiber optic cables is a delicate and precise process that has greatly improved the speed and quality of communication. It will no doubt remain at the forefront of communication technologies for years to come.
