How To Wire Your Boat Trailer Lights

By | July 24, 2022

Getting the boat trailer lights wired up correctly is an important step to ensure safety on the road. As a boat enthusiast, you know that you can’t enjoy the open waters without the necessary equipment to transport your craft from point A to point B. Wire up the lights on the trailer correctly and you are ready to hit the waves.

The process of wiring boat trailer lights may seem intimidating if you have no prior experience. But don't worry! With just a few tools and proper guidance, you can easily get the job done in no time. All you need is an electrical tester, wire cutters/strippers, two-conductor 16AWG wire, and a few other essential items.

The first step is to locate the trailer light fixtures. After unlatching the trailer coupler, look underneath the trailer frame and find the appropriate end for the wire harness. Then, connect the trailer’s lamps and markers by stripping the insulation on the 16 AWG wire and insert it into the appropriate pigtails. Finally, connect the trailer lights to the truck’s harness or auxiliary battery, ensuring a secure connection for all of the wires.

Whether you are just starting out or an experienced boater, following these steps will help you wire your boat trailer lights correctly. Above all else, be sure to check all of the connections to make sure everything is working properly. Don't let something as simple as properly wiring your lights stand in your way of the open waters. Follow these steps and you'll be ready for your next boating adventure in no time.
