Installing an exterior junction box is a great way to bring power to your outdoor appliances and lighting. Not only does it provide the necessary infrastructure for your wiring needs, it also helps to keep you safe from the risk of electric shock. Fortunately, installing an exterior junction box is relatively easy and can be done in 3 steps which require very few tools.
Step 1 begins with measuring and drilling. After having identified the area where you want the junction box to be placed, you’ll need to measure and mark the spot for drilling. Make sure that the hole size is larger than the box itself, as it will make it easier to fit later on. Once you have drilled the hole, insert a foam gasket or sealant into the edge of the hole to prevent water from entering.
The second step involves connecting the cable to the junction box. Make sure that the cables you are using are rated for the voltage that your appliance or lighting requires. Connect the live (brown) wire to the junction box’s brass terminal, the neutral (blue) to its silver terminal, and the earth (yellow/green) to its green terminal. After the connections have been made, wrap them firmly with electrical tape.
Finally, you’ll need to attach the junction box to the wall and secure it with screws. Before doing so, insert the previously connected cables into the box, taking care not to pinch the wires or disrupt the connection. Use suitable screws, making sure that they are long enough to fix the box securely to the wall.
Now that the exterior junction box is correctly installed and secured, you can begin to connect your wiring to the main power supply. Just remember to follow safety instructions and to switch off the power before attempting to work with electricity. If in doubt, it is always best to hire a qualified electrician.
