How Do You Wire A 4 Trailer Light

It’s a common sight: A vehicle towing a trailer, without any of the trailer lights working. It’s an unsafe situation, as other drivers can’t tell if you’re slowing down or changing lanes. The good news is, you don’t need to be an experienced handyperson to wire a 4-trailer-light system. With a few simple tools and a bit of know-how, you can have your trailer lit up in no time.

The basics you’ll need to wire a 4 trailer light are a flathead screwdriver, a set of pliers, a crimping tool, adhesive-lined heat shrink tubing, wire splices, and, of course, the trailer wiring harness. It’s also important to make sure your trailer is properly grounded to the vehicle—failing to do so can create shorts or even cause an electric shock.

Once these basics are taken care of, you can begin connecting the wiring harness to the trailer and the vehicle. First, begin at the back of the trailer and connect the trailer’s light connectors to the corresponding colors of wire on the wiring harness. Next, mount the converter box at the front of the trailer and connect it to the ground wire. Lastly, route the wiring harness to the vehicle’s rear-light wiring circuit and secure it. Make sure to splice any bare wires and wrap them in adhesive-lined heat shrink tubing for protection from the elements. Once all wires are connected, turn on the vehicle lights and verify that all of the trailer lights are working properly.

With only a few tools and a bit of know-how, you’re now ready to hit the road with a safely-wired 4-trailer-light system. Just remember to always follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and double-check that all connections are secure. Doing so will help ensure that you and others can stay safe while driving by night.
