How Do 4 Wire Trailer Lights Work

Every car owner knows the importance of having working trailer lights for your vehicle. Not only are they essential for proper safe driving, but they also ensure that your car meets legal requirements. But just how do 4-wire trailer lights work?

The basic set up for a 4-wire trailer is fairly straightforward. The four wires are typically wired to the trailer's 12-volt system and arranged in the following order: brown, green, yellow and white. The brown wire is connected to the positive side of the trailer battery, while the green wire carries the power from the negative side. The yellow wire acts as a signal line, and is connected to a toggle switch or other signal source. Finally, the white wire provides a ground connection.

When the signal source is activated, such as when the brakes are applied, the power stored in the yellow wire will be sent to the trailer lights. At this point, the lights will turn on and off depending on the strength of the signal being received from the signal source. The stronger the signal, the brighter the lights will shine. If the signal source is not activated, the lights will remain off. This process ensures that trailer lights are always functioning properly, regardless if the vehicle is moving or not.

It is important to note that the wiring setup for a 4-wire trailer is slightly different than that of a 3-wire trailer. Additionally, the manufacturer of the trailer may have specific instructions on the correct wiring setup, so it is important to consult the owner’s manual beforehand. If done correctly, 4-wire trailer lights provide a reliable source of illumination and safety for drivers on the road.
