Gone are the days of manual monitoring and controlling of electrical substations. With advancements in technology, automated GSM-based Substation Monitoring and Control System (SMC) has become the norm. This system enables efficient and remote operations of electrical substations, making the operations more efficient, economical and safe for the operators. The GSM-based SMC system helps to monitor, detect and control all electrical equipment across the substation from a central location.

The GSM-based SMC system is built around a 3 phase substation circuit diagram comprising of sensors, digital I/O port, relay devices and controllers. These are connected to the GSM network via a cellular modem and a GSM gateway. This system utilizes various sensors like temperature sensors, current sensors, voltage sensors to measure and monitor parameters throughout the substation. The sensors send signals or data to the GSM modem which is then transformed into a mobile text message or SMS. The SMS is then relayed to a GSM gateway, which receives the data through its GSM module, processes and stores it in its internal memory.

The GSM-based SMC system provides a number of benefits such as real-time monitoring, efficient operation of the substation, improved safety and reliability, automatic reporting of faults and alarms, and remote control and operation of electrical components. Furthermore, the system also allows for preventive maintenance and predictive maintenance. This helps to avoid costly breakdowns and improve the efficiency of the substation. The use of GSM-based SMC system in substations has created a whole new era of efficient and economical operations.
