Fiber Optic cables carry communication signals over long distances in the form of light. These cables are invaluable for today’s internet-dependent society, but there are different types of optic cables out there. One of the most popular and important is the OM1, OM2, and OM3 fiber optic cables.
OM1 or “62.5/125” cables are some of the oldest types of multimode fiber cables. This type of network cable is often used in older applications; however, it is not compatible with newer technologies. OM1 cables feature glass fibers that are 62.5 microns in diameter, which is about the width of a human hair. This makes them more susceptible to errors due to their larger size. The OM1 has a maximum bandwidth of just 200 MHz per km, which is less than the OM2 and OM3 cables. But they are still used in many places around the world because its low cost makes it an attractive option for many businesses.
The OM2 or “50/125” type of fiber optic cable is also known as “Laser Optimized” as it has been designed for use with laser-based light sources. It features fiber strands that are 50 microns in diameter. This means that the OM2 has a much greater bandwidth capacity compared to the OM1, with a maximum of 600 MHz per km. This makes it suitable for modern optical networks that require higher speeds. The OM2 is also much more resistant to signal interference.
Finally, the OM3 type of cable, which is often identified as “Aqua.” This type of fiber is similar to the OM2 in terms of diameter, but it is geared towards use with short wavelength lasers. This allows the OM3 to have the highest bandwidth capacity of all three types of cable, with a maximum of 2.2-2.7 GHz per km. This makes it suitable for use in very high bandwidth data transmission across large distances.
So, when choosing the right type of fiber optic cable for your needs, be sure to consider the OM1, OM2, and OM3 varieties as each offers different levels of performance and compatibility. The OM3 is the fastest and most reliable of the three, but its higher cost may make it an impractical choice for some setups. The OM1 is the least expensive of the three but offers the lowest bandwidth capacity. The OM2 is the ideal middle ground, offering decent performance at a reasonable price.
