Electricity usage by country can have a significant impact on both the environment and the economy. From reducing emissions to powering industry, electricity consumption affects all aspects of life. Understanding the trends in global electricity usage is critical for predicting future needs and for planning beneficial infrastructure investments.
The United States leads the world in total electricity usage, consuming around 4,800 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2019. This represents a slight decline from 2018, while China, the second-largest consumer, saw consumption rise to 7,500 TWh in the same time frame. India follows with around 1,500 TWh, making it the world’s third-largest user. Other nations put in far less effort: European countries collectively use 2,500 TWh each year, and the entire African continent uses around 1,000 TWh annually.
In terms of per capita electricity usage, the United States remains at the top of the list, with 12,700 kWh used on average each year. By comparison, the European Union’s citizens consume 6,000 kWh per capita each year, while Indians only use about 800 kWh. Poverty is a significant factor in these figures, and many countries with low electricity consumption levels lack reliable access to electricity. As more nations gain access to resources and businesses take advantage of technological advancements, global electricity usage is expected to grow significantly over the coming years.
