Almost every home has electrical circuits that bring power to various parts of the building. But this power needs to be regulated by a breaker box. The breaker box is the distribution point responsible for controlling the power that enters and leaves each particular room or area of your home. Over time, you may need to add additional circuits to your breaker box. This job isn’t as easy as many assume, as there are some safety precautions that need to be taken before and during the installation. Start by turning your main breaker off. You should find it at the top of your breaker box, with a big handle that must be flipped “off.” Next, you will need to remove the cover from the box, using a flathead screwdriver. Once the cover is off, you can begin the installation procedure. Take note of the current layout of the box, including the spaces available to house the new circuit. The next step is to attach the new circuit. Most breakers these days are the push-on type, which simply requires attaching the line and load terminals either to the top or bottom of the breaker. It can also help to place the breaker into the breaker box before connecting the ground terminals. Don’t forget that the breaker should fit in firmly and without any gaps to ensure a secure connection. After attaching the wire, you’ll have to turn the main breaker on again. This provides power to the circuit and will allow you to test it out.
